“I taught them to work and do what they enjoy.” Elon Musk is known for many things, but at the top of this list is his obsession with work. He often repeats the words: “No one has ever managed to change the world by working only 40 hours a week.” Of course, the inventor also repeatedly notes in his interviews what price he has to pay for this. So, in an interview with HBO, Musk said: “No one should force you to work so much. This is not good. People shouldn’t work so hard. It blows my mind and makes my heart ache. There were times when I worked 120 hours a week. You wouldn’t wish this on your enemy.” For better or worse, where did Musk get this crazy urge to work? Well, if you ask his mother about this, she will probably admit that she played a significant role in this. Former Canadian model and nutritionist Maye Musk is now 72 years old. She has 2 sons – Elon and Kimbal, as well as a daughter, Tosca. She recently published her new book. Before publication, May wrote an essay in which she talked about the key moments in raising her children. In short, from childhood she taught them to work hard and allowed the children to do what they liked. Musk’s childhood was difficult. He was born to May and Errol Musk. When he was 9 years old, his parents divorced and the boy stayed with his father. Later, in an interview with Rolling Stone, the entrepreneur admitted: “My father was a “terrible person.” After graduating from university, Musk moved from South Africa to Canada, where his brother, sister and mother soon moved. Under the circumstances, May had to work constantly, but she “didn’t feel guilty about it because there was simply no other choice.” There are five key points that helped a woman raise such successful children: May gives a few of her own examples here, but whether she realized it or not, the benefits of this approach have long been scientifically proven. Thus, according to the results of one study, children who do housework become more successful in the future than their peers. Looking at how Elon Musk grew up, we can conclude that he had to grow up in a hurry. May calls this a feature of his parenting style, and not his mistake. So, she writes: “My parents behaved with us like adults who could be relied on. It is expected that this left a mark on my method of education.” Mae Musk wrote: “I did not force them to study or check their homework beforehand. It was entirely their responsibility.” And it worked, given the incredible amount of time Musk now spends at work. May is against parents pampering their children and allowing them to become accustomed to a luxurious life before they can afford it. As long as it doesn’t affect their safety, let them take care of themselves. The inventor’s mother says: “During college, they lived very poorly: a mattress on the floor, six roommates or a dilapidated house. But that didn’t stop them. If your children are not used to a luxurious life, they can handle anything.” Her advice here is limited to “don’t worry.” May writes: “Many parents worry too much about their children. Want some advice? Let children be responsible for their future. Teach them good manners, but let them decide what they want from life.” Elon Musk’s mother
