“I taught them to work and do what they enjoy.”

Elon Musk is known for many things, but at the top of this list is his obsession with work.

He often repeats the words: “No one has ever managed to change the world by working only 40 hours a week.” Of course, the inventor also repeatedly notes in his interviews what price he has to pay for this.

So, in an interview with HBO, Musk said: “No one should force you to work so much. This is not good. People shouldn’t work so hard. It blows my mind and makes my heart ache. There were times when I worked 120 hours a week. You wouldn’t wish this on your enemy.”

1. From childhood I taught them to work.

May gives a few of her own examples here, but whether she realized it or not, the benefits of this approach have long been scientifically proven. Thus, according to the results of one study, children who do housework become more successful in the future than their peers.

2. Learn to see them as adults.

Looking at how Elon Musk grew up, we can conclude that he had to grow up in a hurry. May calls this a feature of his parenting style, and not his mistake.

So, she writes: “My parents behaved with us like adults who could be relied on. It is expected that this left a mark on my method of education.”

3. Let them do what they like.

Mae Musk wrote: “I did not force them to study or check their homework beforehand. It was entirely their responsibility.” And it worked, given the incredible amount of time Musk now spends at work.

4. Don’t teach luxury.

May is against parents pampering their children and allowing them to become accustomed to a luxurious life before they can afford it. As long as it doesn’t affect their safety, let them take care of themselves.

The inventor’s mother says: “During college, they lived very poorly: a mattress on the floor, six roommates or a dilapidated house. But that didn’t stop them. If your children are not used to a luxurious life, they can handle anything.”

5. Make children responsible for their future.

Her advice here is limited to “don’t worry.” May writes: “Many parents worry too much about their children. Want some advice? Let children be responsible for their future. Teach them good manners, but let them decide what they want from life.”
